Two days in to my week off my throat started scratching. Fortunately it's been three days of sore throat only and no other symptoms at all, so fingers crossed that's all it is. I'm eating lots of oranges, just to make sure.

I've finished reading Alexander McCall Smith's Friends, Lovers, Chocolate, which I liked better than his Sunday Philosophy Club. Even so, I find it odd that every character in the book seems to have the same voice, that of the leading character; I'm also always surprised when the text mentions her age as being fortyish, because she reads twenty or thirty years older than that (to me, anyway).

Opening library books, I like to see the little marks people make to remind themselves they've already read it. I draw a tiny flower head in the top right corner of the title page; I often seem to share this page with people who have the initials LG, SJR and backwards J, as well as someone who draws a plus sign with C and J in opposite corners. There's also someone who circles page fifty. The book I began after Friends, Lovers, Chocolate was one of the many millions of detective novels published by Constable Crime. We were off to a bad start when I opened the title page to find someone had given it "4/10" and someone else had written "Convoluted - G". Perhaps that influenced me too much. I gave it to page sixty before giving it up as a bad job. If G found it convoluted then things must really get busy after that, because up till then not a single thing had happened. I drew my little flower and put a cross underneath to it, adding my own skull and crossbones for future readers.
